BEET JUICE FOOD COLORING

I can't bring myself to use artificial food dyes. I used beet juice for the frosted heart-shaped sugar cookies I made for my son’s wedding. The frosting was a pretty color and did not taste like beets! I then used the beet pulp to make treats for my grand-dogs and grand-pig. You can look online for other natural options.

I got the idea to use beet juice from “Minimalist Baker” blog: DIY Natural Food Dye

What are the ingredients in artificial red food coloring? Per McCormick's site the ingredients are water, propylene glycol, FD&C Reds 40 and 3, and 0.1% propylparaben (preservative).

BEET JUICE FOOD COLORING

What I did:

-Washed one medium beet, cut off the top, and cut it into several pieces

-Placed beet pieces in a food processor and pulsed until small pieces

-Placed the processed beet into a piece of cheesecloth and squeezed the juice into a bowl

-Used the juice for the cookie frosting and the pulp for the animal treats
